August 26 marks the birthday of a Catholic nun and missionary, Mother Teresa or known as Saint Teresa of Calcutta, who is admired by many because of her charitable works.
Her journey began after she joined the Sisters of Loreto at the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Ireland and moved to India as a teacher. In 1946, she experienced her “call within a call,” which she considered a divine inspiration to devote herself to caring for the sick and poor. Mother Teresa was also the founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic congregation of women and nuns that manages homes for people suffering from illness.
Aside from clinics, counseling programs, orphanages, and schools, the congregation also runs soup kitchens that would feed hundreds of hungry people in various areas. To celebrate her life, try to serve these unusual but delicious pastries that even Mother Teresa would love! (Read: ‘St. Teresa Embodies the Important Role of Women in Society’ – Pope Francis)

You might not get enough of the not so sweet taste and buttery layers of this pastry dessert! Baklava is made of unleavened pastry dough called phyllo filled with crushed nuts and soaked in honey or syrup. It has a tangy and mildly sweet flavor and a flaky texture. What makes it appetizing to eat is the crunchy and cinnamon-scented mixture of pistachios, walnuts, and hazelnut! If you prefer a heavier pastry than the usual go-to bread in cafes, baklava is a good choice. It is also a popular pastry dessert in Iranian, Turkish, and Arab cuisines that Mother Teresa possibly served during her mission in India, according to ancient tradition. Get the recipe here.

You can eat this bread alongside a meal, dip it into sauces, or top it with tomato sauce and cheese for a quick naan pizza. It can also serve as a substitute for pita bread and tortillas!
