It’s no secret that Catholic saints preside over many things– there are patron saints for everything in this world, even the Internet! So, it comes as no surprise that there is a saint for people who have chest or breathing problems.
St. Bernardine of Siena became the patron saint of those with breathing problems through a personal miracle. Born in 1380 in Italy, Bernardine had a pulmonary defect from birth. This ailment in his lungs prevented his voice from being heard by large groups. And since Bernardine loved to preach, this was a problem. (Read: 7 Things To Remember When You Catch The Flu)
So, St. Bernardine prayed to God and for the Blessed Virgin’s intercession. He was healed of his defect and his voice grew more powerful with every sermon. St. Bernardine trusted in God’s healing power and was eventually granted healing.

A Prayer to St. Bernardine of Siena for Respiratory Illnesses
St. Bernardine of Siena,
you were healed of respiratory illness
and preached the love and mercy of God everywhere you went.
I come to you now seeking your prayers for
[Name of the person]
and all who suffer respiratory illnesses.
Plead their cases in union with Mary, the Mother of God,
and seek healing for them if that is God’s holy will.
Pray, dear saint, that they suffer with joy,
persevere with hope,
and that they join their afflictions with Jesus’ for the salvation of souls.
I ask your intercession on their behalf in Jesus’ holy Name.
Amen.
