As a precursor to the Laudato si Inter-University Congress that will be happening in September, Pope Francis has sent out a video greeting addressed to all participants. Bringing together local and international experts, the Congress will discuss various aspects on “Caring for Our Common Home”, and how we can go about joint action for the future.
The event is organized by National Interuniversity Council (CIN), the Council of Rectors of Private Universities (CRUP) and the Argentine Episcopal Conference (CEA). (Read: CBCP Launches Nationwide Program for the Care of Environment)
The organizers say that the event was inspired by “the urgent challenge to protect our common home [which] includes the concern to unite the entire human family in the search for a sustainable and integral development,” and Pope Francis’s encouragement to foster new dialogue to address environmental issues.
A ‘social encyclical’

In his message, Pope Francis said that his 2015 encyclical, Laudato si, is not just a ‘green’ encyclical, like most think. The Holy Father said that while it tackles issues of the environment like climate change, global warming, and pollution, the encyclical also discusses what people can do and how they affect all these things.
With this, the pope called it a ‘social’ encyclical as well–and he hopes that the Congress will increase the public’s awareness on the social and environmental aspects of these issues. (Read: A Prayer for Environmental Protection)
Pope Francis also prayed for all participants and experts of the Congress, and ask the public to pray for him as well.
The Laudato si Inter-University Congress will be happening on September 1 to 4, and will be accessible through the Internet anywhere around the world. More than a thousand participants is expected to join the event, according to organizers.
