It’s not often that Kpop idols have downtime or free time off their busy schedules. Even amid the pandemic, our favorite idols would prepare for and hold virtual concerts, write songs, record albums, and produce other content for their fans. After all, the idol life is practically a 24/7 lifestyle.
But when these busy celebs do get some much needed rest and relaxation, they use every second of it doing their hobbies. And one common hobby for Kpop artists is reading! Kpop Book Recommendations: The Devotion of Suspect X (Keigo Higashino)
In a livestream for his birthday in 2019, EXO member Kai shared to his fans that his favorite book is “The Devotion of Suspect X” by Keigo Higashino. The novel is the third book in Higashino’s early 2000’s “Detective Galileo” series. A portion of the synopsis reads:
“Yasuko Hanaoka is a divorced, single mother who thought she had finally escaped her abusive ex-husband Togashi. When he shows up one day to extort money from her, threatening both her and her teenaged daughter Misato, the situation quickly escalates into violence and Togashi ends up dead on her apartment floor…”
The novel won Higashino various awards, including the highly regarded Naoki Prize.
Kpop Book Recommendations: The Metamorphosis (Franz Kafka)
In the past, the late SHINee member Jonghyun had mentioned that he loved Franz Kafka’s 1915 novel, “The Metamorphosis”. He has mentioned a few times that it is one of his favorites, alongside Haruki Murakami’s “Kafka by the Shore”. The story is about a man who wakes up inexplicably transformed into an insect, and has to navigate life awkwardly in his new form. Kpop Book Recommendations: Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 (Cho Namjoo)
Red Velvet’s Irene had mentioned once during a fan meet that she’d read the controversial novel. We say controversial because it was released in 2016 during the height of the #MeToo movement–and it tackled the mental and psychological effects misogyny and discrimination can have on women. And ironically, Irene received backlash after sharing that she read the book. But the book is powerful and has an impact on readers, so it’s definitely worth the read.
Kpop Book Recommendations: The Brothers Karamazov (Fyodor Dostoevsky)
IU, one of Korea’s most successful solo artists, was previously seen reading Fyodor Dostoevsky’s “The Brothers Karamazov” in the reality show “Hyori’s Homestay”. According to some, she has even called it the best book she has ever read! And she isn’t the only one who thought of the book this way–many have called it Dostoevsky’s masterpiece, and one of the best books that have ever been written. The Brothers Karamazov is a philosophical novel that revolves around free will, God, and morality, and centers in on the killing of Fyodor Karamazov.
