Some of you may think it is normal to pee frequently, and it has nothing to do with food. But did you know that bladder-irritating food exists? Yes, several food and drinks trigger our bladder, causing us to go numerous times to the bathroom.

A cup of good coffee is what keeps us going. Unfortunately, it is included in the list of bladder-irritating food and drinks. Aside from palpitation, coffee can also irritate the bladder as it contains acid, as per WebMD. Other beverages such as tea, energy drinks, and sodas can lead to more bathroom visits as well. It is advised to limit caffeinated drinks and opt for decaf drinks, water, diluted juice, and herbal teas instead! So, if you’re in the middle of a meeting or class presentation, try to avoid coffee or make it half decaf and half regular.

Citrus fruits

Citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and limes are all acidic, including fruit juice with sweeteners, making it harder to control the urge to pee. An article from Medical News Today said that citrus fruits are believed to irritate the bladder, which might cause painful urination. Are you experiencing frequent urination these days? You may need to stop eating citrus fruits for a while, then slowly add a small amount of it back to your diet to observe any changes or improvement to your bathroom habits. For citrus fruit juice, try switching to fruit juice that contains less acid, such as apple or pear juice, and dilute it with water. (Read: LIST: Vitamin-Rich Fruits You Need on Your Plate, Stat!)

While some enjoy the thrill of eating spicy food, you might need to consider your spice limit too! Chilies, hot peppers, wasabi, fiery salsa, and other hot spices trigger the bladder the most. For those who have an overactive bladder, it is best to avoid them. If you don’t have an overactive bladder but experience peeing often, WebMD advises cutting back on the spices or spicy food little by little to see if it will continue or get better.

Bad news for chocolate lovers out there. WebMD noted that chocolates have caffeine and acid that have the tendency to irritate the bladder intensely. It must be really hard to resist, but as much as possible, eat less of it and avoid eating it in the evening, especially as a midnight snack if you don’t want to spend the night going back and forth to the bathroom. You can try to swap chocolates with white chocolates instead! (Read: 4 Secrets To Getting A Good Night’s Sleep)
