5 Ways To Honor Saints And Devotions This September

Aside from being the birthday month of Mama Mary, September also commemorates the Seven Sorrows of Mary. This month is also filled with feast days dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and to great saints who followed her example.

Let these ways to honor these devotions guide you as you embark on new journeys this month. So get your calendar and let’s start marking!

September 8: Celebrate Mama Mary’s Birthday

What better way to start the month if not with a birthday party, right? Let Mama Mary’s birthday give you the joy and renewed vigor that will help you get through another month. Gather your family together for a birthday handaan for Mama Mary. You can also make it a family tradition every year. (Read: 4 Books to Make You Love, Appreciate Mama Mary)

September 15: Start A Devotion To Our Lady of Sorrows

This is a two-day celebration as September 14 commemorates the finding of the true cross. The day after that, the Church honors the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. This day reminds Catholics when Mary journeyed the Way of the Cross with her Son Jesus. Today, we remember Mary’s seven sorrows. Let us reflect how she can understand and assist us during our most sorrowful moments just as we understand her and thus will be able to console her in her grief. Pray the Seven Sorrows devotion and the Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus to start a devotion.

September 21: Throw a party for God With St. Matthew

St. Matthew was the author of one of the four Gospels. But before that, he was Levi, a tax collector and one of the most famous sinners in the bible. He was famous for leaving everything– literally getting up from his tax booth– to follow Jesus when he was called. But what is endearing is that Matthew threw a party for Jesus, just as soon as he decided to leave his wealth and power behind! Let St. Matthew remind us that we must celebrate our earthly sacrifices for Jesus– not grieve them as a loss. Our earthly sacrifices mean that we are blessed enough to have something for our family, ourselves, and for God. Thank God for these blessings with your family’s favorite meals and pray gratefully together around the dinner table. (Read: Putting a party together? September 23: Pray, Hope, and Don’t Worry with Padre Pio

St. Padre Pio is famous for saying, “Pray, hope and don’t worry.” On his feast day, take his advise and just let go of your worries and let God handle them. Go to Mass, pray the Rosary, or you can go to Confession if quarantine restrictions in your area allows it. Since Padre Pio is famous for being a confessor, honor him by going to the Sacrament of Reconciliation to rid yourself of anxiety, depression, and the lack of hope that comes from sin. September 29: Learn to Trust the Archangels

September 29 is the feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. So why not trust them to help you on this day? Pray for St. Michael to protect your home, let St. Gabriel guide you to send a message of joyful announcement– send an encouraging text to a sad friend, or say “God bless you” to a stranger. Lastly, ask St. Raphael for healing of the sick– especially those who are currently battling COVID-19.
