On movie or TV sets, there is often catering for all the stars of the movie and the crew behind the camera. It allows them to eat and replenish their energy in between takes especially during long nights.
But for Koreans, there is a “unique” practice during filming! Aside from food catered on set, they also have coffee and food trucks available for the actors and crew. And oftentimes, the trucks even have the photo of the lead actor on its body, and also has a standee or poster on the side. These trucks are oftentimes ordered by fans or fellow actors and get it delivered to the cast and crew! So what’s the reason behind this popular and very generous modern-day tradition?
‘Fighting!’
The most common reason for fans to send their idols or for Hallyu actors to send their chingus (friends) a food or coffee truck is that they want to wish them good luck on their current projects. As the popular Korean expression goes, “Fighting!” is what they want to tell their beloved oppa or unnie while on set.
And more often than not, the trucks are customized and messages of support are written or stuck onto the body of the truck!. Talk about effort and wholehearted support! The cost to hire these trucks are no joke as it is said that prices range from hundreds of dollars to even thousands for just one truck!
Filipino fans of Ji Chang Wook (Ji Chang Wook Philippines), who sent the actor a coffee truck on the set of “Melting Me Softly” in 2019, even said that it took them one-and-a-half months just to raise funds for it. “We wanted to show our support and let him know that we are cheering him on in his comeback drama,” they said. Jinkee Pacquiao, who is a big fan of Ji Chang Wook, also sent him a coffee truck and even got to meet him during the filming of the same drama! And the Korean actor likewise had his fanboy moment when he met his idol, boxer Manny Pacquiao, who accompanied Jinkee to the set.

But aside from showing the actors support, fans also want to thank the staff and crew for all their hard work just to make the film or series. After all, if it weren’t for the directors, production crew, writers, cameramen, and everyone else behind the camera, these actors wouldn’t be able to provide movies and dramas for their fans!
“We send Food Truck not just for our beloved actors, but we want to give appreciation to all the people who are working hard for the project. It’s a sign of our affection and concern for our favorite actor but also the entire team,” a representative of Hyun Bin’s Indonesian fan club said. “It’s our way of showing our support for our idol’s hard work, and to show appreciation to the entire staff and crew who are working off-camera as well to create a beautiful movie/drama,” added Edelweiss Philippines, a PH-based fan club for Son Ye Jin and Hyun Bin.
Some celebrities who have gotten food and coffee trucks are Park Seo Joon, BLACKPINK’s Jisoo, IU, and Kim Soo Hyun.
