Pope Sends Prayers For Mexico Hospital Flood Victims

Pope Francis on Sunday prayed for the victims of the Mexico floods and the loved ones they left behind.

Last week, the Hidalgo state in Mexico experienced heavy rainfall, which displaced 30,000 people across the state. Moreover, a river in Tula, one of its towns, even broke its banks because of the amount of water it had been trying to hold. (Read: 4 Common Rainy Season Diseases– And How To Prevent Them)

Unfortunately, the latter incident had caused flooding in the town’s hospital. Power supply was also cut off due to the water coming in. 17 patients, some of which were being treated for COVID-19 and were on oxygen therapy, had been killed in the hospital flooding.

An additional two deaths were reported in Ecatepec, a northern suburb of Mexico City, after the floods.

Pope sends condolences

After the recitation of the Marian prayer on Sunday at the St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis addressed the audience present and spoke about the victims of the flood that happened in Mexico. He expressed his closeness with all the victims, especially those in the Tula hospital who passed away.

In addition, Pope Francis also prayed for “those being unjustly held in foreign countries.” He said it is unfortunate that there are still many cases of this, and that each one is different but all complicated. “I hope that these people may as soon as possible return home,” the pope said.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that he was “very saddened” about what had happened in the hospital, and advised people living in low-lying areas to evacuate to higher ground to protect themselves from the calamity.
