Celebrate The International Day of The Girl Child Through These Actions

Today is the annual celebration of International Day of the Girl Child, also known as the Day of Girls and the International Day of the Girl, that aims to promote women empowerment and amplify the voices of young girls around the world.

On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child to recognize “girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.” It also focuses on addressing the issues girls have been facing in society, such as gender inequality, gender-based violence, and discrimination.

The theme for this year is “Digital generation. Our generation,” where they call for equal access to the internet and digital devices for girls and targeted investments to “facilitate opportunities for girls to safely and meaningfully access, use, lead and design technology.” (Read: These Instances Prove That Pope Francis Supports Equality)

You can get involved and show your support to young girls and amplify their voices from the comfort of your homes through these efforts!

International Day of The Girl Child: Share stories

Girls are encouraged to share their stories to the world by posting photos, blogs or vlogs, videos on different social media platforms that can inspire other girls while collectively amplifying their call to action. Everyone can also share those empowering or inspiring stories and use the hashtag #InternationalDayoftheGirlChild to reach more people and inform them about the movement.

Plan International Canada, a global organization dedicated to advancing children’s rights and equality, suggests girls create their own “Brighter Future” wall with their families and friends. If they are not comfortable sharing their stories on social media, they can write or print it, then design their walls or rooms with inspiring messages, quotes, and stories. (Read: 5 Podcasts by Empowered, Inspirational Filipinas)

The United Nations also commemorates and highlights the Generation Equality Forum (GEF), it is a 5-year commitment from civil society leaders, governments, corporations, and change-makers from around the world for bold gender equality impacts. Not just girls and women, but everyone should participate in informing the public and communities about the struggles of girls and promote equality in every aspect to achieve “meaningful and sustainable change for a digital revolution by, with and for all.” Understanding what women are fighting for and being an ally is one of the most important things you can do for the International Day of the Girl Child.
