The Best New Yorker Photos of 2022

Yet just as many made pictures from the quiet back rooms of history, the places where the aftershocks of the news are felt. Greg Miller, the Connecticut photographer known for his pictures of children waiting for buses after the Sandy Hook shooting, turned his eye to the children of Uvalde as they returned to school this fall. Visiting Uvalde’s curbs, driveways, and front lawns, Miller glimpsed the students before sunrise, not quite at home or at school but, rather, on a “membrane between the two.” The kids come across as contemplative, self-possessed, and industrious, yet also impossibly small, dwarfed by the long morning shadows around them and by everything that’s happened before and since.
