Experience Cinema Under the Stars With These Cinemalaya Films

The 17th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival pushed through with its second online edition amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, the film festival is setting up a drive-in cinema, dubbed Cinema Under the Stars!

Film enthusiasts can watch select Cinemalaya films outdoors at the Liwasang Ullalim in the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Complex. It will run from September 2 to 4 with daily screenings every 4 p.m., 7 p.m., and 9 p.m. (Read: Heads Up, Indie Film Buffs! Cinemalaya 2021 Now Set On August 6)

It was originally scheduled on August 14 but was moved to September due to quarantine restrictions. Among those that will be shown are the two sets of short films in competition, as well as Mae Paner’s full length exhibition piece entitled “Tao Po”.

Tickets for the Cinema Under the Stars are priced at PHP 250 each and can be purchased online through KTX.ph. Select a schedule and fill out all the required payment details. You can pay through credit card, over-the-bank, online bank transfer, and e-wallets such as GrabPay, ECPAY, PayMaya, and GCash. (Read: LOOK: 5 Indie Films on Cinema One Originals’ YouTube Channel)

Everyone is welcome whether they are riding their bikes and cars or even just walking and jogging! Viewers who want a more intimate and safer viewing experience can also opt for the drive-in theater option, where they can just park and watch from the comfort of their vehicle! Feel free to bring your own blankets and snacks to enjoy this unique viewing experience.

Cinemalaya is known for its series of thought-provoking independent films produced by talented Filipino filmmakers. The Short Films in Competition will be the highlight for this year. Below is the list of 13 finalists that will compete for the Balanghai Awards:

Meanwhile, the Indie Nation category is split into two sections: full-length and shorts. The full-length has four films, which are Kintsugi by Lawrence Fajardo, ECQ Diary (Bawal Lumabas) by Arlyn Dela Cruz Bernal, Don Filipo by Tim Muñoz, and Lockdown by Joel Lamangan. The Indie Nation Shorts offers 19 films from “19 perspectives that hold a social mirror to our realities.” It is divided into three programs. You may check the list here

Cinemalaya Retrospective

If you’ve missed the previous award-winning Cinemalaya short films, you might love the Cinemalaya Retrospective! This category features last year’s best short films, including Tokwifi by Carla Pulido-Ocampo, Living Things by Martika Ramirez Escobar, Pabasa Kan Pasyon by Hubert Tibi, Ang Pagpakalma sa Unos by Joanna Vasquez Arong, Quing Lalam Ning Aldo by Reeden Fajardo, and Excuse Me Miss, Miss, Miss by Sonny Calvento.
