Conservation area and eco-tourism site Masungi Georeserve has been shortlisted for this year’s Lush Spring Prize that aims to recognize and support social and environmental regeneration efforts.
Among more than 400 applicants from 81 countries, the popular eco-tourism site was nominated under the Young Projects category, which features community groups, organizations, businesses, or networks that are one to five years old.
At least three awards of up to 20,000 pounds—approximately PHP 1.37 million—will be obtained in the said category. (Read: DENR to Start Preserving Pine Trees in Baguio Using Improvised Funnel Traps)
Masungi Geopark Project
Masungi Georeserve is dedicated to restoring 3,000 hectares of limestone formations and supporting the threatened biodiversity in the mountains of Baras, Rizal. It has been preserved for more than 20 years through consistent restoration efforts.
Its Masungi Geopark Project is one of the largest collaborative reforestation efforts in the Philippines. The area is heavily threatened by large-scale mining, land speculation, timber poaching, and other illegal activities.

Despite this, the project has increased its measures to protect the area from quarrying and land grabbing activities.
Their efforts include community development, where park rangers, locals, and even some of those previously involved in illegal activities in the conservation area participate in restoration activities and reforestation campaigns.

Lush Spring Prize 2021
The Lush Spring Prize is a joint venture between the cosmetics company Lush and Ethical Consumer, a non-profit multi-stakeholder cooperative in the United Kingdom.
It is established to support regenerative projects that “go beyond sustainability by taking holistic approaches to building the health of ecology, economy, and social systems.”
Since its launch in 2017, it has distributed more than 600,000 pounds or around P41.24 million to different regenerative projects.
By supporting regenerative projects, the Lush Spring Prize aims to inspire more individuals, groups, communities, and businesses to get involved with regenerative processes. (Read: CBCP Launches Nationwide Program for the Care of Environment)
Other categories for the Lush Spring Prize 2021 are Intentional Projects, Established Projects, Influence Award, Ancient and Indigenous Wisdom Award, and Youth In Permaculture Prize.
The awards ceremony will be held online from October 23 to 31, as a lead-up to the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26). A panel of judges will decide the winners.
