After receiving full approval from the United States’ Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Pfizer vaccines will soon be available in local drugstores, Malacañang announced on August 24 in a virtual press briefing.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the full approval of Pfizer would speed up the approval process of the Philippines’ FDA to make it available for commercial use in the country.
“Well, magiging commercially available na po ang Pfizer. Kaya konting panahon na lang po at mabibili na sa ating mga botika ang Pfizer kung ito po ang inyong preferred brand,” he stated.
Roque also noted that Pfizer was the first vaccine to receive the emergency use authorization from the US FDA. (Read: Filipinos Can Now Apply For International Certificate of Vaccination Online)
Pfizer’s full approval
According to a news report from Manila Bulletin, the US FDA granted full approval to Pfizer COVID-19 shot on August 23, paving the way for more vaccine mandates in their country and abroad.
“Dahil meron tayong polisiya ng Philippine FDA ay mas mabilis naaaprubahan for commercial use ang mga bakuna’t gamot na meron nang approval sa mga stringent na FDAs gaya po ng Estados Unidos,” Roque explained.
Pfizer has the highest efficacy rate among all COVID-19 vaccines, which has a 95% efficacy rate. The FDA has recently given Pfizer an emergency use authorization (EUA) to be used on those aged 12 to 17 years old.

Roque also revealed that there will be around 362,700 doses of Pfizer that will arrive in the country on August 25.
EUA application for Moderna
Meanwhile, Moderna has applied for EUA to use its vaccine for children aged 12 years and above, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Director-General Eric Domingo said on August 24.
In a news report from GMA, he reiterated the vaccine experts are currently looking into the firm’s application.
“Hopefully, within this week or next week makumpleto na ang evaluation nito,” Domingo stated. (Read: Vaccination For Aged 12 to 17 May Start by the End of September or October)
He also said 12 million to 14 million additional vaccine doses will be needed to inoculate children all over the country.
“If we are going to include those 12 to 17 years old [in our vaccination program], that would mean additional 12 to 14 million [people to be vaccinated],” Domingo added.
Currently, only adults or those aged 18 years old and above are getting inoculated with COVID-19 vaccines in the Philippines.
