With cases in the Philippines soaring to numbers between 17,000 and 18,000 in the past few days, authorities, personalities, and other individuals are encouraging the public to get vaccinated even more. And one of the personalities who recently encouraged the public to get their COVID-19 vaccines is Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma. (Read: Survey Says More Filipinos Now Willing to Get COVID-19 Vaccine)
In a post on the official Department of Health (DOH) Viber Community, a video of the archbishop was linked for the 2.6 million members to see. The admin of the group said that the Cebuano archbishop has joined the #RESBAKUNA Campaign of the health department–a campaign to encourage Filipinos to get their jabs.
Importance of vaccines
In the video, Archbishop Palma started off by saying that he wants to ask a favor from the people, especially those who are part of their diocese.
He said that while prayers are powerful, the public should keep in mind that there are things we can do to help curb the spread of the virus. Wearing of face masks and face shields, observing social distancing, and washing hands are some of the things we should remember and give importance to during these times, said the archbishop.
But what he emphasized more is getting vaccinated. “Brothers and sisters, there are still many being infected by COVID-19, especially the Delta variant. Many still succumb to the disease, according to doctors and nuns,” Archbishop Palma said. “And according to them, most of those who pass away are those who are unvaccinated,” he added. Archbishop Palma says this was why the diocese opted to release a video to encourage everyone eligible to get themselves and their loved ones vaccinated.
‘Gesture of Love’
The archbishop also quoted Pope Francis, who was also recently in a video alongside various male religious from the Americas. He said that he agrees with what the Holy Father had said in the video–getting vaccinated is a profound way of promoting the common good and caring for each other. “No matter how small, love is always great. Contribute with this small gesture for the better future,” Archbishop Palma said.
He ended the video by saying that he hopes everyone looks in their hearts, and discovers solidarity and charity, as these are steps towards combatting the pandemic.
