7 Things To Remember When You Catch The Flu

Aside from the fear of catching COVID-19, this is also the time when more people are susceptible to the flu. Perhaps the changing weather is to blame as the colder months begin to settle– even Pope Francis has caught the flu once!

“Good morning, brothers and sisters. Today is a cold day, eh?” With his red nose, slightly hoarse voice, handkerchief pulled from his sleeve, and a warm scarf around his neck, it was easy to see that the drop in temperature could have made our beloved Lolo Kiko susceptible to catching a cold. How can we be like Lolo Kiko and withstand the flu and rainy season? (Read: 4 Common Rainy Season Diseases– And How To Prevent Them)

If you have tested negative for COVID-19 and are sure that it is the flu, here are seven tips from Luigi Piero Biondi, first-aid doctor at the Niguarda Hospital in Milan. Read on!

Flu tips: Call the doctor right away

“The moment you get sick, I advise you to consult your family doctor. He will give you the medical attention that is needed depending on your sickness. His opinion is important for what medicines—especially anti-fever drugs—you should take. Do not self-medicate.”

Flu tips: Stay warm and dry, avoid stress, and watch out for changes in temperature.

“Try as much as possible to not tire yourself out, get wet in the rain, or expose yourself to changes in temperature. Do not leave home for at least ive to seven days from when you get sick; stay in bed, well-covered. For all the grandparents, it is best to stay away from taking care of your grandchildren at this time so you will not pass the cold to them.” (Read: Pope: Grandparents, elderly are bread that nourishes our life)

Flu tips: Eat nutritious food.

“Take small and frequent meals, preferably a light diet. Eat foods rich in Vitamin C, such as citrus fruits to help the immune system. In general, fruits and vegetables are good for all ages because they are fresh and easy to digest.”

Flu tips: Pay attention to your excess mucus: this may make the situation worse.

“Blow your nose frequently: this way you can prevent mucus accumulation. This is an absolutely important aspect in avoiding further complications or diseases of the respiratory tract. In addition, you should also do nasal washes to free your nose of mucus build-up.”

Flu tips: Drink plenty of water to stay well-hydrated.

“One of the major issues when one has the flu is dehydration. When the body temperature rises, its liquids are lost, and the skin dries up. Dehydration also causes
fatigue and mental confusion. Stay away from alcoholic drinks, cafeine, tea, fruit juices, and even herbal teas. Instead, drink plenty of water at room temperature.”

Flu tips: Go old school– vaporize.

“To clear the lungs, it is good to vaporize: Dissolve a little bit of baking soda in hot water, and cover the head with a towel to inhale the steam. For a cough, take some fluidizing syrups to help you breathe better.”

Flu tips: Take antibiotics only when your doctor says you should.

“If you are not feeling better after two to three days, see the doctor once again. It is up to him—and only him—to decide if you should take some antibiotics.” (Read: 5 Things You Must Keep in Mind When Buying Medicines)
