A Prayer To Celebrate Mama Mary’s Birthday

Today, all Christian churches, especially the Catholic, Orthodox or Eastern Churches, celebrate the Feast Day of the Blessed Virgin Mary. For Filipino Catholics, Mama Mary has always been a symbol of our own mothers’ love for each and every one. So much so that she has been honored and venerated through parishes and churches named after her.

And why not? Mama Mary plays a vital role in God’s salvation history. While many think that she was merely a vessel that God used, the Magnificat clearly shows that God looked upon her with favor and blessed her. She is the only person on this earth to have the title of “Theotokos” or Mater Dei or Mother of God. No other woman in the Bible comes even close. (Read: Do Catholics Really Worship Mama Mary?)

So today, on her birthday, let us remember and honor our dear Mama Mary through this special prayer. And as you pray, greet her a very happy birthday!

The Magnificat

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children forever.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
