LOOK: First Train Sets For MRT-7 Arrive In Manila

San Miguel Corporation (SMC) has unloaded and installed the first train set for its Metro Rail Transit-7 (MRT-7) project in Quezon City on September 11. 

The three-car train set is still wrapped in plastic and was put up along the tracks at the Tandang Sora station. It is one of the two train sets ordered from Hyundai Rotem in South Korea. Progress 

The MRT-7 is a 22-kilometer mass transit system that connects to MRT-3 and Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1), which extends from North Avenue in Quezon City to San Jose del Monte, Bulacan. 

“We are working round-the-clock to meet the first test run by next year. We know that our countrymen are eagerly awaiting the formal opening of the MRT-7 so that they can experience faster, more efficient, and comfortable travel,” SMC President Ramon Ang said.

The project is currently at 55.3% completion despite the pandemic restrictions and pending right-of-way issues. According to SMC, workers have already completed the installation of bored piles, girders, and other foundational works.

“This is even more crucial during the pandemic when additional transportation options are required to bring people safely to work and back to their homes,” he added. (Read: Your Ultimate Guide on the Beep Card Implementation)

Time travel and comfort

Filipino commuters struggle with the worsening traffic and transportation crisis everyday, especially during the pandemic. With that, the MRT-7 aims to reduce travel time from Quezon City to Bulacan to just 35 minutes instead of the usual trips that take hours due to traffic congestion and limited transport options.

It is expected to accommodate up to 850,000 passengers daily. The trains will also have electric power systems, computer and communications systems, signaling systems, and automatic fare systems, among others.

“We have to be very thorough during the whole process to ensure that it is done efficiently and quickly while inspections are continuously being done,” Ang stated. (Read: LOOK: MRT-7 Halfway Done, Set to Open in 2022)

SMC ordered a total of 36 trainsets or 108 cars from Hyundai Rotem. More trains are expected to arrive by the end of the year.
