Are you a K-Drama fan who watches your favorite Korean shows on Netflix? If yes, then what we’re about to say may be sad news for you. Netflix is removing 10 K-Dramas from their platform permanently by September 30.
This means these shows, even if it’s on your list or you’re watching–or rewatching–it currently, you won’t be able to access it anymore by the said date. That’s because just like any other show or movie on their platform, Netflix has licensing agreements with different content providers (TV networks, film production companies, etc.) to obtain streaming rights for the said series and films. However, just like any other contract or agreement, these licensing agreements between Netflix and content providers also expire. And sadly, this September 30 will be the end of a handful of K-drama streaming contracts. Read on to see if your favorite show/s are saying goodbye to Netflix this month.
Reply Series
One of the most loved K-drama series, Reply 1988, Reply 1994, and Reply 1997 have made huge imprints on its viewers. Fans of the show highly recommend it to newbies to the Korean drama world, and also rewatch it themselves for who knows how many times! Unfortunately, fans will have to look for a new platform to watch it on as the nostalgic and heartwarming dramas (yes, all three of them) will be removed from Netflix by the end of the month.
It’s Okay, That’s Love
This series which made a huge buzz on social media in 2014 stars Jo In-sung (That Winter, The Wind Blows) and Gong Hyo-jin (Master’s Sun). It’s a romantic drama that also addressed the social stigma that surrounds people with mental health issues and other societal “minorities”–an aspect that many viewers praised the show for. Chicago Typewriter
Chicago Typewriter stars Yoo Ah-in (Sungkyunkwan Scandal), Lim Soo-jung (Finding Mr. Destiny), and Ko Kyung-po (Reply 1988). A veterinarian and two writers, the three seemingly have a mysterious connection to Korean Independence fighters during the Japanese colonial period. They race against time to find out the truth about the past. And you, too, have to race against time to watch it before it leaves Netflix!
Cheese in the Trap
The webtoon adaptation is topbilled by Park Hae-jin (My Love From the Star), Kim Go-eun (Goblin), Seo Kang-joon (The Third Charm), and Lee Sung-kyung (Weighlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo). The story focuses on the ups and downs of life and relationships that university (college) students go through. The Liar and His Lover
If you’re into romantic comedies that have a musical aspect, it’s time you watch the 2017 K-drama, ‘The Liar and His Lover‘. The series stars Lee Hyun-woo (Queen Seondeok), Red Velvet’s Joy, Lee Jung-jin (The K2), and Lee Seo-won (Uncontrollably Fond). The drama was Joy’s acting debut.
Oh My Ghost
Oh My Ghost is a 2015 romcom thriller featuring Park Bo-young (A Werewolf Boy), Jo Jung-suk (Hospital Playlist), Lim Ju-hwan (The Bride of Habaek), and Kim Seul-gi (Legend of the Blue Sea). It’s all about a shy woman who is possessed by a spirit which uses her body to fulfill her mortal wishes so she could move on to the afterlife. The show was so good that it actually won several awards from different award giving bodies!
Tunnel
Choi Jin-hyuk (The Heirs), Lee Yoo-young (Late Spring), and Yoon Hyun-min (Heartless City) star in this 2017 crime thriller. But it’s not like other crime thriller shows because it involves time travel! The story was well-written and the show well-executed that a Thai remake was done in 2019, and and Indonesian remake was announced in 2020. (Read: 4 Korean Love Teams Who Became Real-Life Couples)
Let’s Eat
Let’s Eat revolves around four single people who all love to eat, but can’t eat alone in public because they think that dining out isn’t designed for people who eat by themselves. However, they eventually eat together in public and their lives easily become connected with each other. It stars Lee Soo-kyung (Soulmate), Yoon Doo-joon (Because This Is My First Life), Shim Hyung-tak (Touch Your Heart), and Yoon So-hee (The Spies Who Loved Me).
