A Feast Day Prayer to St. Padre Pio

St. Padre Pio, also known as Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, was a Capuchin Franciscan who was born in 1887 to a family of farmers in southern Italy. He is most known for his miraculous intercessions for the healing of many faithful Catholics.

As a priest, Padre Pio was assigned to a friary in San Giovanni Rotondo. In 1918—a year after he joined the friary—he had a vision of Jesus and started to have stigmata in his hands, feet, and sides. As medical doctors and Church authorities had no explanation of what was happening to him, Padre Pio was temporarily forbidden to celebrate Mass or hear confessions. The word about his unexplainable condition also spread throughout the cities, and it did not take long before busloads of curious people started coming to see him.

After some time, when he was once again allowed to practice his priestly duties, Padre Pio celebrated Mass in a crowded church every day at 5 AM, blessed the sick at mid-morning, and heard confessions in the afternoon. Every day, crowds would line up to see the healing priest, with many of them saying that Padre Pio knew details of their lives even before they spoke of them to him.

Even after his death in 1968, Padre Pio continued to be an image of intercessory healing. Today, the faithful still pray to him to ask for his intercession with God to help them overcome their health problems. (Read: St. Padre Pio’s Prayers for Healing and Miracles)

He was canonized in 2002 by Pope John Paul II and was named the patron saint of civil defense volunteers, adolescents, and stress-relief.

As we celebrate the feast day of St. Padre Pio today, September 23, let us reach out to him with this powerful prayer!

Prayer to St. Padre Pio

Beloved Padre Pio, today I come to add my prayer to the thousands of prayers offered to thee every day by those who love and venerate thee. They ask for cures and healings, earthly and spiritual blessings, and peace for body and mind. And because of thy friendship with the Lord, He heals those thou doth ask to be healed, and forgives those thou forgiveth.

Through thy visible wounds of the Cross, which thou didst bear for fifty years, thou wert chosen in our time to glorify the crucified Jesus. Because the Cross has been replaced by other symbols, please help us to bring it back in our midst, for we acknowledge it is the only true sign of salvation. As we lovingly recall the wounds that pierced thy hands, feet and side, we not only remember the blood thou didst shed in pain, but thy smile, and the invisible halo of sweet-smelling flowers that surrounded thee, the perfume of sanctity.

In thy kindness, please help me with my own special request: [mention here your petition, making the Sign of the Cross].

Bless me and my loved ones. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
