Pope Asks for Prayers for Europe Trip, Prays for Hurricane Victims

During his Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis asked those present at St. Peter’s Square to pray for him for his Budapest-Slovakia trip, and he prayed for the United States amid the hurricane and flooding afterwards.

“I ask everyone to accompany me in prayer, and I entrust my visits to the intercession of so many heroic confessors of the faith, who in those places bore witness to the Gospel amid hostility and persecution,” Pope Francis asked from the audience.

This coming Sunday, the Holy Father will be traveling to Budapest for the closing of the 52nd International Eucharistic Congress where he will be celebrating the Holy Mass. After the Mass, Pope Francis will then transfer to Slovakia to meet the Catholic community there and celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows–Slovakia’s patron saint. “After Mass, my pilgrimage will continue for a few days in Slovakia and will conclude the following Wednesday with the great popular celebration of Our Lady of Sorrows, Patron saint of that country,” the pope said. “These will be days marked by adoration and prayer in the heart of Europe,” he added.

After asking for prayers, Pope Francis then offered a prayer for all the victims of Hurricane ida, which affected the northeastern part of the United States.

‘[I am] for the people of the United States of America who have been struck in recent days by a severe hurricane,” the Holy Father said, “May the Lord receive the souls of the deceased and support those who are suffering from this calamity.” (Read: Pope Francis To Visit Scotland, Attend Climate Change Conference In November)

A Category 4 hurricane, Ida caused catastrophic floods, killed 77 in the US and 20 in Venezuela, and damaged more power poles than Hurricanes Katrina, Ike, Delta, and Zeta combined.

The estimated worth of damages is at least US$50.05 billion. US President Joe Biden is now visiting the states that have been most affected by the hurricane.
